what is "the line of fire"?

>All this talk of standing out of the way of spinning bowls and things has me asking the painfully obvious. Having not yet launched one, am I correct that the line is perpendicular to the spindle/spinning axis and near the headstock? In other words, don't stand facing a spinning bowl in line with the bowl facing the lathe? Is that the only "line" to worry about? I also sense from the article section that leaning in to get wapped by a bouncing tool is a bad idea...
