Subject:
power sanding RPMs?

>I just bought an angle drill for power sanding. Like many such drills, it has a variable speed trigger. It goes up to 1400 RPM max., but that seems too fast to me.

I'm sure I'll get a number of different answers to this question (indeed, that's what I want), and I'm sure that different speeds are appropriate for different circumstances, so my question is: what RPM should I use, and for what circumstances?

Let me break that into two questions. What's a good speed for sanding with the lathe 'on', and what's a good speed for sanding with the lathe 'off'?
