Determining speed on Mark Kauder's VS Jet Mini mod

>I'm finally getting around to attaching the Vega variable speed motor kit to my non-VS Jet mini. I'd like to get a real determination of the motor's top speed, so I know what range I'm getting on the output side.

What's the best way to go about this? The info sheet that came with the motor suggests a tachometer, but that's more money at trouble than seems wise here. Perhaps someone can post the output speed for a given resistance on POT1 (the potentiometer at the top left of the control board)? I could then adjust mine to the same resistance and assume that gets me within 10%?
