Subject:
Myrtle ? ? ?

Barry Turner
>I found a small block (5" x 5" x 3") of mystery wood in my scrap box last Friday. I thought it might be maple, but it was too light in weight. I turned a small potpouri pot from it. As I began to shape the piece, I noticed this peppery, spicy aroma in the shop. The wood has absolutely crazy grain. I couldn't even pop the little nub off the back because the grain was going the wrong way. I finally had to remount the piece onto the lathe and turn the nub off. The color of the wood is a bit greenish with some blackish tones. I think this is myrtle burl. Opinions please. I don't have a photo yet, but will post one later if I can figure out how. Thanks.
