Power Grip Jaw question

My question is should I always turn the tenon without a dovetail and long enough so it uses the entire depth of the jaws, including the serrated part? Is it OK to use the normal short dovetail tenon on lighter projects? Is there a rule of thumb for weight and length of workpiece where I should use one or the other (just dovetail or full grip)? The piece I want to work with right now is about 12" long and 8" square (and heavy). I hate to lose so much of it to a tenon that's the full depth of the jaws if I don't have to.
