Turning Archive 2005

I've turned a few rough boxes (as in the Raffan videos) from a wet oak log. I bandsaw'd the log into 3x3x6" blanks, then rough turned and hollowed them. I avoided the pith entirely in the blanks, and the grain is straight.
The walls are approx 1/2" thick, and the bottoms are perhaps 3/4" or 1" thick.
Within a few days either the top or the bottom or both are splitting across the bottom.
I'm keeping the rough turned blanks in open air in my basement, which is dehumidified (to about 50% RH at about 68 degrees or so).
Any suggestions? If I slow the drying by sticking them in a paper bag, will they still split but more slowly? Again, I say, Raffan makes this look easy. :)
