Back hollowing boxes help

>Hi,

I'm learning to back-hollow boxes (as in Raffan's videos). I seem to be able to do OK, but I get quite a small catches inside, and I seem to have to work far harder than Raffan does on his videos to do the job.

I'm using a 1/2" shallow flute gouge on approx 3" mahogany (KD) box blanks.

The grind on the gouge is the standard one on the Sorby gouge right now, which is perhaps too steep, perhaps I should elongate the grind?

Thanks!

-Phil
