Turning Gum tree wood

I haven't ever turned gum before.

The first piece I cut appeared to have some spalting as well as rather strange discolorations. It also was a bit punky I think. Some of the other logs are more uniform in color, while some have a lot of staining on the ends of the logs.

Does anyone have positive or otherwise experiences turning gum?

I'm just learning, so if I've picked up a bunch of wood that will be a poor learning wood then I'd love to know that before I get frustrated...
