Subject:
Detail Gouge vs Spindle Gouge

Jerry Hall
>What's the difference apart from the grind? They both seem to made from round bar stock with a shallow flute. Some well known vendors don't even list a detail gouge. Is a detail gouge supposed to have an even shallower flute to make it stronger? That is the only clue I have, apart from the profile and grind, and of course more money for a "detail gouge." If this is so why not just get a "spindle gouge" of round bar stock, and grind the requisite profile?

Thanks for any help
