Wood bracelets

>My daughter saw some wood bracelets at the mall. She came home and wanted me to make her some on the lathe. I made one and it turned out ok,I was wondering if there was a better way to mount it on the lathe. I turned it between centers and cut it down to as far as I dared go. Then sanded the outside and the inside curves. Then I cut it all the down until it almost came off. Then I cut some thin strips of sandpaper and put them between my chuck jaws and the wood.(inside chuck)Trued up the center and sanded the inside. Is there a better way of doing this? I'm a rookie at this stuff. David
