Subject:
Bowl turning and tear out question.

Barry Irby
>When I turn bowls with the pith of the tree oriented at about 90 degrees to the shaft of the lathe, I get tear out patches near the rim and opposite each other. I am using a bowl gouge with the Ellsworth grind on it. The patches are the end grain I think.

Does anyone have a way to beat this? What tool or technique might work better?
