Subject:
"Shop built" scroll chuck?

I do some glue ups that I feel would be drilled more accurately on the lathe rather than the DP.
In reading the articles section I came across the Long worth chuck that with its' self centering feature I would imagine is much like a scroll chuck.
Here's the question.
Has anyone made a scroll type chuck or any other type chuck that can be used repeatedly to hold 3/4"- 1" square blanks for drilling on the lathe out of wood or other commonly used materials rather than metal?
I have turned tenons and used a Beall Collet but would like to eliminate the tenon step.
Any ideas?
