Subject:
breaking finials every time!

ken chase
>Thought I'd take a break from hollowing forms and do something easy and relaxing. Made a box as a gift and planned a finial to dress it up. Well! Not as easy as I thought. I keep breaking them. What's the proper method? I'm using a spindle gouge, spinning fairly slow and proceeding cautiously. In spite of that I've ruined three in a row. Seems the slightest catch in the wood sends it off the lathe in pieces.
Any words of wisdom will be appreciate.
