Supping up the mini lathe

I looked around on eBay and here and it looks like going the DC route is cheaper than AC. Ideally, I'd like to use a 3/4 or 1 HP DC motor. That should be more power than my 1/2 HP mini lathe, right?

The speed controls are confusing. There are so many of them. Some are recognizable as a box with a switch or two and a knob. Some need additional parts for higher HP (?!). That makes me nervous. Others are just circuit boards. Where's the knob thingy?! I think I'll stay away from those altogether.

Can anybody who has done something like this point out exactly what I need so I don't get the wrong things? I just want to add true VS and a little more HP to my Jet mini lathe. Am I getting in over my head?
