Green crotch wood

>I am not sure what to look for in a piece of crotch. In a previous post on this someone wanted to know about the lathe. My lathe has a 3HP motor and a swing of 24" inbord. My attempts so far at cutting a crotch through the pith at all three places sometimes exposes some flame and sometimes I get a rotted core that I couldnt see before the cut. I want to core out some nested bowl blanks and it seems I loose the figure more as I remove each blank or I only get 2 blanks out of the bark inclusion ones. Is this normal? Anyway to tell whats inside before I drag the wood home?
