I cut a V notch in one end of a log. I then make a parallel cut about three inches away from the top and about 3" or 4" deep. The following cut just opens it up enough to get a clamp in there.

You can use one of these for a long time. I think this one is sycamore and is at least a year and a half to two years old.

The top of this one is quite chewed up. You may be able to see that the clamp pocket is only about 2" from the top. It still is effective. I used it to prepare 30 or 40 pieces for the Southern States symposium.
