Cause neither of these brands of paper towels have a quarter of the absorbency of a piece of punky spalted Beech! :>)

While I haven't gotten around to trying out the thinned varnish solution on that punky spalted maple piece, I did decide to use in on some spalted beech.

I swear I made up a quart of thinned varnish (50% mineral spirits and 50% McCluskey's Spar varnish) and this 10" bowl drank up about 1/2 to 2/3 of it!

And to top it off, after 15 minutes, it was almost dry to the touch. That was some thirsty wood.

Anybody else ever have that happen?
