Newbie question: Do I need a roughing gouge?

>So I'm reading an article in the latest Woodturning Design magazine about spindle turning for beginners. The author (sorry I forgot the name) lists like 3 tools that every beginner wanting to do spindle work must have. One of those tools was a roughing gouge.

I've been turning for almost 4 months now on a mini lathe, doing mostly small spindle work, and I do not own a roughing gouge. I rough out with a skew or spindle gouge. Would a roughing gouge be that much better? What are the advantages of one? Maybe a roughing gouge is more needed for larger spindle work?
