sinking wod

>I just finished rough turning a small bowl (5 1/2") and placed in an alcohol bath. It sank right to the bottom? This is a piece of maple cut from a "Y" at a tree service yard. It is a piece of hard maple I believe. The piece it came from had no checking or cracking so I assumed it was green, however it turned as if it was dry. Having never turned green wood it was not what I expected from what I have read.

Any ideas as to why it would sink? I would think dry wood would float, and all the chips that came off this piece are dry, no sign of moisture at all.
