Questions of you large bowl turners

Pete in Holland, MI
>Have been having fun on my Jet 1236 turning bowls to the capacity of the machine, but starting to look for bigger challenges. Have seen photos of store bought bowl lathes with a lot of good ideas incorporated in them. Recently had been watching a home built bowl lathe (28" swing) going on E-bay. Closed out tonight with a lot of activity for less than $400. Construction was simple and pretty straight forward. Starting to think it might be an interesting project to start scrounging parts for. Assuming I'd be looking at a lathe capible of 24-28" swing, and be used only for large bowls, what are minimum & maximum speeds that should be planned for? What motor size would be minimum? Has anyone else gone down this road before? Just pondering at this point.
