upgrade to antique lathe *LINK*

>I have been turning on this 1867 Fitchburg lathe for years and love it. However, i would like my students to have the same pleasure but think the foot pedal/speed control is a little to tricky for most beginners.
I am considering replacing the 1 1/2 horse motor with a Leeson motor with a remote speed control..
Is this possible? Also, is there another way.
I am still reeling from the $600 price for the Leeson. Is there another less expensive way to go on a machine this old.?
Thanks in advance. Joaz Hill

Hoping the snow will stop so I can get to the wood pile.
