punkey wood

>I am turning or [should I say sanding] a very punkey piece of spalted maple. No commits about sanding. I rough turned it but tearout is realy bad, so I started sanding . The sanding is removing the soft wood to fast. So I soaked it with thinned lacquer, to firm up the wood. My question Is, is this a good way to firm up wood or does anyone have a better way of firming up punkey wood. Thank you Greg
