Subject:
? about Sears lathe

>A friend has a Craftsman lathe and a problem. It seems that the lathe through the wheel that drives the belt for the fan. Consequently the fan stopped and the lathe heated, apparently quite a bit.

The fan problem is resolved, however the lathe is not operating at low speed. It has the same type drive as a Jet, with the expanding pulley to increase/descrease speed. A possibility is that the heat caused the belt to stretch so that there is only tension at high speed. However this is a thick belt that's ribbed on the side that contacts the pulleys. It seems that it would take quite a bit of heat to stretch.

Question, is it possible for a thick belt to stretch to that degree? Second question, can that belt be replaced with a non-ribbed type or how about a segmented belt?

Thanks
Mike
