"Bird Peck" Pecan

>I was very interested in the thread Gary started below with his hickory ID. As I said there I have some pecan with this feature and am glad to be able to give it a descriptive name.
I assume that woodpeckers peck on these trees over periods of years for the park to be completely ingrown over periods of years? Does anyone else have more information on "bird peck" wood? I know from experience that pecan (hickory) seems to be prone to ingrown bark pockets. How about other woods, for instance cherry, what is the result of bird intervention?
