Subject:
adventures in spidle turning

Georg Waldhof
>made my first experiments this evening with turning some narrow (1") spindles. Learned several things:

1 - while roughing out an unsupported 30" spindle flexes enough to detach from the tailstock.

2 - if the spindle is mounted in a 3 jaw chuck, it slaps around the lathe dramatically after #1.

3 - said spindle quickly turns to shrapnel at 800rpm.

4 - one ought not stand too close during #3.

So - my next project is a spindle support. I seem to recall somewhere seeing something about using inline skate wheels on the support arms. Any suggestions where I can find these as well as a good plan for constructing such a support?

Thanks

George
