Larger bowl gouges and skews

JL work
>I am taking some instruction from a local turning guru - Nick Cook. He has had us using a larger oval skew. I like it for the stability. It does make a difference in handling. I was roughing a cylinder from a square blank the other day.
He advocates using a 3/8" bowl gouge - he doesn't think the 1/2 or greater are that advantageous.
So I figured I would throw the questions out there (before I spend another $150 on tools).
Larger skew - yes or no?
