Dust Questions

>I haven't gotten in the habit of wearing a dust mask yet. I just finished turning a small bowl from English Walnut without a mask. I guess you all know the "discovery" I found.
I have 2 questions. First, are the cheap-o paper masks ok?
Second, are there some woods that are more dangerous to inhale the dust than others? I turned some sapele mahogany recently and while it has beautiful colors, I can't stand the smell.
