Sometimes the rings associated with sanding can be best removed with steel wool instead of sandpaper. On harder woods I seem to get good results by using 3/0 steel wool once I have sanded to about 220 grit. I frequently alternate between steel wool and sandpaper to get rid of the sanding rings.
