Subject:
Creating a milk safe finish?

Mike Rubes, Apex, NC
>Hi all,

I have someone who would like me to make a special cereal bowl for her. Her intention is to just use it for morning cereal. Captain Crunch, milk, etc.

I've done bowls with a walnut oil finish that are perfectly food safe, but I worry about the milk mixing with the oil? Just curious, but what would any of you suggest for a "milk safe" finish? I've got a hunk of kiln dried hard maple that I'm going to use for the bowl as that seems like a good choice. She likes the color and the tight grain should, I hope, be easier to keep milk out of the wood.

Any ideas for a "milk safe" finish? Just the oil? poly? epoxy?

Thanks,

Mike
