Subject:
NEED ADVICE ON SPALTING HACKBERRY

Brad Homman
>I was recently given a good sized Hackberry tree (30" at base). I have never turned Hackberry(sp?), but from what I read it is an unremarkable wood unless spalted, and it spalts rather easily. I need some guidance on how to do this, especially with cold weather approaching. Should I cut it into the biggest logs I can handle and leave it outside, or cut it into manageable pieces and put it in plastic bags in a heated basement? How long should it take to spalt? How long before I have to worry about rot once the spalting starts? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
