Drill Press Problem

>What is the best way to clean out the chuck on a drill press? I have not had any prolems until yesterdy when I wanted to demonstrate how a piece of wood is turned into a pen. I removed the end mill but the chuck wouldn't open enough to accept the 7mm drill bit. After fiddling with a piece of brass rod I was able to loosen up something (dirt or crud) enough to get it to open enough for the bit. I have not been able to clean it out further. I can't think of anything that might have gummed it up as it doesn't get any heavy use.
