Subject:
Negative rake scrapers

David Galloway
>Okay, I'm at the GAW symposium and hear David Nittmann, an amazing turner, talk about a negative rake scraper. This is a scraper that has been ground with a 60 degree and 40 degree side. Supposedly is used to scrape on a side grained bowl. It worked great. In fact, a skew is similar without the variation in angles. I used it last night as a scraper on a bowl lip.
Why does this work so well? Any ideas? This was the first I had heard of it although I hear that several English turners have been using it for a while.
Thanks for your insight, if you happen to have it.
