Kinda OT - natural edge box

I'm making a naturale edge cherry shadow box for my dad for Fathers Day. I have some nice cherry boards with the bark on the edges and am going to try to match up 4 pcs so that they're all about 5"x1/2" thick.

My question is...I plan to use my planer to mill the boards down to thickness and wonder what if anything I should put on the bark to keep it from pulling away?? Is there anything or am I just gonna have to take my chances. I hesitate to CA glue them and then run that through my planer....

Any advice is greatly apprecitaed...hopefully I'll be able to post something nice.
TIA
Kurt
