Faceplate turning question... *PIC*

>In trying to turn a base recently, I was adding a small (1/8") step of the top surface to transition into the ogee. I encountered some behavior I was ready for. I used a parting tool. It kept catching and I got a fairly rough torn out surface at the end grain sections. Any tricks to this?

Other than that, the whole thing went fairly well. First time I've tried anything like this before.

Another thing, I expected some darkening of the end grain, but I got a lot more than I expected! The ball and the base are much darker. Oh well!
