pommeling

>HI all,

What is the technique needed to avoid spliting out the corners of a blank when creating a pommel on a turned newel??

I have read my books, and tried various widths of skew chisels taking light cuts with the toe, twisting the skew slightly each way creating a "v", but there seems at least on one corner I still split out.

The blank is a 4x4x47, the lower 16" is square, then the 1/4" tapered pommel, then the rest is turned.

Thanks for any thoughts you might have.
Bill
