Beginner turning problem

Mark Trulock
>I have been turning less than a year, I mostly make pens. I was frustrated with a bowl class I took yesterday through no fault of the teacher. I tried hard but I did not progress.

He worked with me a lot, but I was unable to make a curve on a bowl. I can ride the bevel on a straight cut but I can't seem to make a true bowl. I have a similar problem with spindle work making a bead. All my beads end up pointy. I am at a loss to explain this.

I've tried several DVDs and other teaching methods. My favorite cut in woodturning is the planing cut with a Skew chisel (thanks to the Lacer DVD).

Anyone got any advice?
