Turning - The Adrenaline Factor

(This was prompted by the Chat about hollowing systems. There sure are a lot of them out there, and more being added by the day)

Turning involves
A. grinding strange profiles on the ends of oddly shaped pieces of steel, often spraying hot sparks of glowing metal all over the place
B. honing sharp ground edges to rediculous degrees of sharpness
C. attaching, by various means, a moderately large to insanely large piece of wood, often asymetrically shaped, directly or indirectly

to the shaft of an electric motor in the 1/2 to 3 horsepower range

that spins at, or up to, 3560 rpms
D. applying the rediculously sharp cutting edge create by “B” to the

outside of thenow spinning piece of wood described in “C”
AND THEN
E. Applying said sharp cutting edge to the INSIDE of the spinning piece

of wood

Now “A” through “E” should satisfy even moderately extreme
Adrenaline Junkies with enough opportunities to meet their daily
Adrenaline Fix (DUH!).

But there’s always the One Percenters who aren’t satsified with
the normal adrenaline generating parts of turning. Oh no, not nearly
enough BUZZ. These folks want to turn B I G!

Three foot diameter piece? Too small.

26 inches of tool hanging over the end of the tool rest?
Too short.

That which does not kill you, or maim you, makes you
strong? Well maybe not, BUT - it does give you an
adrenaline rush, assuming it doesn’t kill you before
the adrenaline kicks in.

And then the Buzz Killers get in the act.

My GAWD - that’s dangerous as hell! Why don’t you
- put some kind of depth of cut limiter on the cutting
end so it can’t dive deep into the wood?
- make something to keep the tool from flipping you

up in the air? What you need is something that will

keep the handle from kicking up when the other end

gets caught in a cut and is pulled down.
- figure out a way to keep the handle end of the tool
from rotating about its long axis when the side of
the cutting edge catches in the wood? Maybe some

kind of bar or handle sticking out 90s to the shaft?

AND maybe rather than just a round handle, how about

if it were D-shaped - AND you trap the D between two

steel rods, or maybe two pieces of angle iron bolted

together with a spacer for the D-Handle.

Now, when something goes wrong, or horribly wrong,
it’s the tool and its handle that get beat up - and maybe
the piece explodes - but, with the exception of the
explode part, YOU are saved.

Then some Techno-Weenie will come along and ask
“Why use steel (or carbide) to cut the wood - why not
just Laser it out? No mechanical catches to deal with
AND - there’s intense energy concentrated in a little
tiny dot - that can cut steel (and maybe even carbide).

A tool, or part of the piece, being shot who knows
where, maybe through the roof, or door - that’s
BORING. BUY - a laser beam, that, if it gets away.
can instantly burn a hole through you, and the door
and char the side of your neighbor’s house. NOW
THERE’S an Adrenaline Generator. A crushed digit
or two, a broken arm or dislocated shoulder are
pretty impressive Adrenaline Junky badges of honor
(read “indicators of stupidity” if a Fraidy Kat) - but
- a nice clean hole, through your palm, forearm or
ear - now there’s a conversation starter amongst
Adrenaline Phreaks. REAL Adrenaline Junkies will
be easy to spot - they’ll look like Swiss Cheese - AND
whistle when the wind blows hard enough.

I can hardly wait!
