Turning Archive 2008

>The last time I went to visit my mother she told me she had been selected as Sergeant at Arms of her local woman's club and showed me a gavel that looked like someone had made it with a 1" dowel head and a 1/4" dowel handle. She asked me if I could make one that was a little more hefty (you know how rowdy those Southern women can get) and I had completely forgotten about it.
So tonight I took a few minutes to turn her one out of some scrap walnut that I had. I don't think I'll set the world on fire with my gavel making, but I don't think it's too bad for a first gavel and it's much more attractive than what she has.
Length is 8", head is 2 1/2" long and around 1 1/2" in diameter. I drilled the head before I turned it and the handle is friction fit. It took a good bit of beating on the end of the handle to get the head seated.
Thanks again Molly. Mom's birthday is this weekend and she'll be happy that I remembered her request, along with the other part of her gift of course.
