Subject:
Ellsworth gauge pull cut tear-outs

Aage Rendalen
>I love my Ellsworth gauge. That's all I use, with the exception of a detail gauge for the foot when I reverse turn. On the inside of bowls it works perfectly. I have no need of a second gauge as I transition from the side to the bottom. And I get a very smooth finish off the gauge.

But not on the outside. That is, when I use pull cuts on the outside, working from the tenon to the rim, I get serious tear-outs. Push cuts, when the tail stock allows for the it, work fine.
