Subject:
walnut and checking

Mark Paulley
>Hello all,
Does walnut check easier then most woods, like Maple and Cherry, Hackberry? I have (for now) some walnut logs that have been in my barn for about 4 years. All about 18" long and about 8-10" in dia. I cut in half long ways and then cut the ends 2-3" off each end to remove checking, however the checking is still there. So I cut again and checking still there. I put some on the lathe thinking I could turn down to an acceptable size and the checking would be gone but NO-still there.
Just curious if others have checking problems with Walnut. I guess fire pit will need to be started up!
Any assistance is approeciated and thanks for your help in advance
