>I had a platter shaped piece of spalted maple from an old, large tree. Sanding wood with this much color is tough, since it's very soft in some areas, and very hard in other. I rough turned the form to "flat", and then lapped the face dead flat on a sheet of sandpaper on a sheet of melamine. Sanded to 400G.
The bowl was hard to cut cleanly, as even the sharpest tool and lightest touch didn't seem to help. I floded the bowl with laquer to harden it, but alas, I couldn't get the "flawless" black look I wanted. The base or foot is a small cylinder.
This is a proof of concept for another idea I'm toying with...
