Trying to get the hang of it

Mark in B'ham
>After asking for opinions about a month ago, I finally decided to go ahead and get a Jet Mini. Now, I'm trying to get the feel for the cutting tools. Last night I mounted a piece of practice wood and tried to shape out a small dish. I have it mounted on a glue block on the face plate and still have it between centers while I rough out the outside shape.

Here's my question, I kept getting pretty bad catches when I tried to let be bevel ride and then cut a small shaving with the gouge. I found that if I lower the angle of the cut and take a sort of scraping cut I get fewer catches. Any suggestions?

Yeah, I know, get of the computer and go watch someone else do it. I will, I will, but until then?
