1st New Year bowl, made of ancient... *PIC*

>... kauri from New Zealand. A fellow turner from NZ sent me a sample of this wood which has been buried for 40,000+ yrs. and it's very interesting stuff. Reminds me of cypress, soft and shows every tiny imperfection in your sanding- only after you apply the finish! But it has an inner chatoyant glow when struck by light that is very unusual? Very dry and dusty to turn and sand, not at all like the bog oak from England that is more like coal, so I'm glad to have had a piece to play with and sample.
