Subject:
Too much horsepower?

Doug Reynolds in Seattle
>I am currently using a Jet mini-lathe. My City just cut down a large number of London Plane trees and I scored a truck load. I understand my Jet mini does not really have enough power for one of those wonderful coring devices. Got me to wondering, is there such a thing as too much horsepower in a lathe? My reading indicates that some models can be had with an upgrade to, say, a five (5) horse motor. Is that just asking for trouble? My tablesaw has three (3) horse and when I bought it, was available in 5 horse motor, but, only in three phase. So, why not a five horse for a lathe?
