blank glue-up grain orientation ?

>I'd like to make one of these "face in a turning" things that would look like the following picture (that's my daughter's profile). It will be about 8" diameter at the top. Unfortunately I don't have a blank large enough, so will need to glue something up.

My question is how would you orient the grain when gluing up? I sketched two ideas below, but I think there is at least a third method face-gluing boards together. The first picture shows the grain oriented vertically (like an end-grain cutting board). I could also stack a bunch of discs on top of each other (like picture 2 below)? Seems like Method 1 is a lot more work and results in fragile edges at the top. Method 2 is easier, but the narrow part of the stem would be more fragile.

How would you do it? Is there a better way?
