Damping and Vibration Help!!

Tim GC
>My Lathe has box section ways approx 6" X 3" I have read elsewhere that drilling one end of each section and filling them with fine sand will add mass (obvious fact) This will dampen vibration caused by any out of balance loads. I have no problem understanding that bit.

The next bit is what I am puzzling over.

When the ways are almost full, pour in clean oil over a period of time until the ways are full to the brim with a sand/oil mix. Advantages??? or am I being particularly stupid and not seeing the wood for the trees.

Oh don't forget to seal the ways before returning to the horizontal.
