Turning mesquite

>I have a farm in West Texas. Lots and lots of mesquite.

I have a combination of some very large (and dead) mesquite trees and I have an ample ;-) supply of live mesquites that I can cut down.

Would the wood be any good for turning bowls and/or pens? If so, should I use the "old dry" mesquite or cut down a live tree and use the fresh (green) mesquite.

Any and all advice is appreciates.

As always...TIA
