Turning thin

>I had occasion to turn a small open form very thin -- a little less than 1/16". Nothing special - just a small open goblet shape. I know enough to turn it to the desired thickness near the rim and then continue turning a thin portion in stages down to the bottom. But when it came to sanding the interior, I couldn't get it right. Too much vibration. Should I have sanded at each stage of the turning, the way I turned it, while there was still mass below the thin part?
