What am I doing wrong?

First; You would have to really stretch your imagination to call me a woodturner.
I want to be a woodturner. I think I have the potential to be a decent turner. I spend a good deal of time on the lathe. I make a pretty decent lidded end grain box. My bowls are not meant for the gallery, yet. But sharpening these @#$#%% tools is about to drive me up a wall !!!!! Especially these bowl gouges; trying to put swept back grind on them. I have the vari grind jig and have watched the video on-line a dozen times. I just came in from the shop totally, 100%, without a doubt, the most frustrated I can ever remember being!
I am 64 years old and served 26 years in the US Army and I can't ever remember feeling this dumb about something that can't be that difficult. I have ground away over an inch of a pretty good bowl gouge and finally give up.
