Tonight's Chat: Texturing, Tools and Techniques

Steve Russell
>Hello to the group,

Please join us tonight for our weekly Turning Chat. This week our topic will be:

Texturing: Favorite Tools and Techniques: When woodturners are ready to move beyond a smooth sanded surface, many begin to explore texturing. With a myriad of tool choices available to you, you're sure to find just the right texture that will enhance the visual and tactile qualities of your woodturnings.

There are many different tools available that will texture the surface of your woodturnings including power carvers, sandblasters, high speed (dental type) carvers, hand carving tools, reciprocating carvers, hand-held torches and many more. You can also make a few simple texturing tools yourself, or adapt another tool in your studio/workshop to apply textures. Join us as we discuss the many different tools and techniques to apply textures to the surface of your woodturnings.

If you've developed a new or innovative way to texture, stop in and share your ideas and techniques. If you've tried to texture before and you encountered a problem, let us know. We can probably get you back on track. Through the mutual sharing of our experiences in these weekly chats (both good and bad), we all increase our knowledge and advance our overall skill set. If you have some pictures of turnings that you have textured, send one or two to Ron to enhance our discussions!

Special thanks to John Lucas for suggesting this topic. :-)

We will start the chat with a 15 minute review of 2 selected works by our WC friends. If you are interested in having your work reviewed at the turning chat, remember to email Ron Sardo: (ron@simplyturning.com) 1 or 2 (max.) photos of some of your recent work (completed or unfinished, in process etc.) for our "Show and Tell" session. Please indicate whether you are submitting the photos as "Completed Work" for a critique, or as an "Assistance Needed" submission that you would like some type of help, or assistance with.

Turning Chat room opens at 9:00pm EDT (For meet and greet)
Show-N-Tell starts at 9:30pm EDT
Main Topic starts at 9:45pm EDT
Post Chat Wrap-Up starts at 10:30pm EDT (For extended discussions if desired)
